Black Friday on WhatsApp: send calendar, budget and limits

Updated on October 28, 2026

To run Black Friday on WhatsApp without hitting a wall on the day, start four weeks out: Black Friday 2026 falls on November 27 and Cyber Monday on November 30, and your portfolio’s messaging limit, template approvals and template quality all need to be sorted before then. Your budget comes straight from Meta’s rate card: every marketing template delivered to a UK number, for example, costs $0.0635. Below you’ll find the calendar, the budget math, the limits that most often break campaigns, and template examples.

This guide assumes you use the official WhatsApp Cloud API and have a list of customers who opted in.

Key dates in 2026

DateWhat it is
Thursday, Nov 26, 2026Thanksgiving (US)
Friday, Nov 27, 2026Black Friday
Saturday–Sunday, Nov 28–29Black Friday weekend
Monday, Nov 30, 2026Cyber Monday

Important for US audiences: Meta states that WhatsApp currently does not deliver marketing template messages to US phone numbers (+1 with a US area code). Promotional templates to US customers will fail. You can still send utility messages (order updates) and reply to customers who message you first. For US-heavy lists, WhatsApp works as a service and order-update channel this season, not a promo blast channel.

Week-by-week send calendar

By Nov 6: get the account ready

  • Payment method. Since October 1, 2026, Meta charges for service messages beyond the free tier of 1,000 per phone number per month, and for utility templates sent inside the customer service window. Without a payment method, Meta stops delivering service messages once the free tier runs out, right in the middle of the peak.
  • Messaging limit. Check your portfolio’s current tier (the whatsapp_business_manager_messaging_limit field on the phone number API, or in WhatsApp Manager). If you need to reach 20,000 people in a day and you’re on the 10,000 tier, there’s still time to move up (see the limits section).
  • Templates. Create and get approval for every template you’ll use now. A new template starts with an UNKNOWN quality rating and may go through Meta’s template pacing, which holds part of the sends until customer feedback comes in. Templates created the day before are the most exposed.

Nov 6–20: opt-in and warm-up

  • VIP list. Invite customers to sign up for Black Friday alerts: a link on your site, at checkout, on social media and in a Click-to-WhatsApp ad. WhatsApp’s Business Messaging Policy requires opt-in for proactive messages. See how to build a WhatsApp opt-in list.
  • Warm-up. Send smaller, relevant messages to your most engaged customers. This builds quality history for your templates and, if you use at least half of your current limit over the last seven days with high quality, Meta automatically raises your portfolio one tier within six hours.

Nov 23–26: teaser

One marketing send with the preview (“starts Friday”, “VIP access opens Thursday night”). Send only to opted-in contacts and segment by interest or purchase history. Avoid sending the same template to the same person several times.

Friday, Nov 27: the day

  • One opening send, early, to the VIP list.
  • Order notifications (utility) for buyers: confirmation, payment pending, shipping.
  • Fast replies. A customer reply opens the 24-hour customer service window, and free-form replies inside it are service messages, much cheaper than marketing.

Saturday and Sunday, Nov 28–29

Instead of another blast to everyone, talk to the people who already replied. According to Meta, marketing messages sent inside the customer service window don’t count toward the per-user marketing limit.

Monday, Nov 30: Cyber Monday

Final marketing send, with a clear deadline (“ends tonight at 11:59 pm”). Then stop: pushing further only hurts your number’s quality going into December.

From Dec 1

Utility: delivery updates, invoices, returns. It’s the moment to show the channel is more than promotions.

Budget from Meta’s rate card

Meta charges per delivered message, by category and by the recipient’s country. Rates are different in every market; here are a few from the USD rate card effective October 1, 2026:

MarketMarketingUtility / service
United Kingdom$0.0635$0.0220
Germany$0.1365$0.0550
France$0.0859$0.0300
Spain$0.0707$0.0200
India$0.0118$0.0014
North America (US and Canada)$0.0250 (not delivered to US numbers)$0.0034

The full table for 13 countries is in WhatsApp API pricing by country.

Example for a UK store with 20,000 opted-in contacts:

ItemCalculationCeiling
3 marketing sends (Nov 26, 27, 30)60,000 × $0.0635$3,810.00
Utility: 2,000 orders × 3 updates6,000 × $0.0220$132.00
Service: 8,000 replies in the month, 1 number(8,000 − 1,000) × $0.0220$154.00
Total (Meta charges)$4,096.00

That’s a ceiling: only delivered messages are billed, and part of your list won’t receive every send because of the per-user marketing limit. Budget the full amount and track actual spend through status webhooks.

The limits that break campaigns

1. Portfolio messaging limit

This is the number of unique users your business portfolio can reach outside the customer service window in a rolling 24 hours, shared across all its phone numbers. The tiers are 250, 2,000, 10,000, 100,000 and unlimited. To go from 250 to 2,000, the business has to complete one of Meta’s scaling paths, such as business verification. After that, scaling is automatic: high quality and using at least half your limit over the last seven days. Because the check looks at the last seven days and moves one tier at a time, a portfolio on 2,000 in early November needs to start warming up early to reach Nov 27 with room to spare.

2. Per-user marketing limit (error 131049)

WhatsApp limits how many marketing templates a person receives when they’re less likely to engage, based on their recent read rate and how busy their inbox is. On Black Friday, when every brand is sending at once, this limit matters more. Blocked messages come back on the webhook with status failed and code 131049, and they aren’t billed.

Meta’s guidance is clear: wait at least 24 hours before resending to a user who got 131049. Retrying sooner tends to produce more errors, and repeated attempts can make delivery to that user unavailable for up to 24 hours. Don’t build an automatic retry loop. More in error 131049 and the marketing limit.

3. Throughput

Besides how many people, there’s how fast. Queue your sends and handle rate-limit errors with spaced retries. See WhatsApp API throughput and rate limits.

Number and template quality

Meta rates every template as GREEN (high), YELLOW (medium), RED (low) or UNKNOWN (no data yet), based on blocks, reports and read rates. A low-quality template can be paused. Two practical effects on Black Friday:

  • Pacing. New templates, or templates without a GREEN rating, may have part of their sends held. The API response returns message_status: held_for_quality_assessment. If the signal is good, messages are released; if it’s bad, the template is paused and held messages fail with code 132015. Meta says it aims to deliver even large campaigns within one hour (99th percentile), but that’s enough to delay a flash sale.
  • Pausing. A template paused mid-day stops the whole send. Keep a second approved template with different wording as a backup.

Your number’s quality rating matters too: many blocks and reports bring it down. See WhatsApp phone number quality rating.

Template examples

Short texts with variables to submit as templates. Marketing templates are billed as marketing; don’t try to submit them as utility. For more, see 60 WhatsApp template examples by industry.

Sending a template through the Cloud API follows Meta’s format:

{
  "messaging_product": "whatsapp",
  "to": "447700900123",
  "type": "template",
  "template": {
    "name": "bf_launch",
    "language": { "code": "en_GB" },
    "components": [
      {
        "type": "body",
        "parameters": [
          { "type": "text", "text": "Anna" },
          { "type": "text", "text": "40%" },
          { "type": "text", "text": "sneakers" }
        ]
      }
    ]
  }
}

How to do this with Vectalk

With Vectalk, you create templates and send them through the API using the same payload as Meta (see send template and create template in the docs). Status webhooks arrive in Meta’s format, including 131049, 132015 and each message’s pricing object, so you can track delivery and spend in real time. You pay Vectalk and Vectalk pays Meta, with no card on file at Meta. With coexistence, your number stays in the WhatsApp Business app for manual support. Create an account at apps.vectalk.com.br/register before Nov 27.

Frequently asked questions

How many messages can I send on Black Friday?

It depends on your portfolio tier: 250, 2,000, 10,000, 100,000 or unlimited unique users outside the customer service window per 24 hours. Check your tier before planning and start warming up early if you need to scale.

Am I charged for messages blocked by the marketing limit?

No. Messages with a failed status, such as 131049, aren’t billed. Wait at least 24 hours before resending to the same contact.

Can I send Black Friday promos to US customers on WhatsApp?

Not at the moment. Meta states that WhatsApp does not deliver marketing templates to US phone numbers. Use utility messages for orders and reply to inbound conversations.

Can I send the offer as a utility template to pay less?

No. Promotional content is marketing. Meta recategorizes the template and may restrict the account’s ability to create utility templates.

How many marketing sends should I do that week?

There’s no official number. In practice, a few well-segmented sends (teaser, launch, Cyber Monday) protect quality and reduce blocks. Talk inside the service window with people who replied instead of repeating blasts.
