For a group of people who need to talk to each other, use a Community. For individual, automated announcements with per-person delivery status (invoices, orders, appointments), use the official WhatsApp Business API with templates, billed per delivered message.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Broadcast lists in the app sit in between: they work for a small number of people and only reach those who saved your number. Below is the full comparison and a guide to choosing by type of announcement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The four options in one sentence each<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Channel:<\/strong> a one-way broadcast in the Updates tab. The WhatsApp Help Center describes channel updates as a broadcast, not a conversation: followers react with emoji or vote in polls, but they can&#8217;t reply or message the admin through the channel.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>What admins get:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Privacy on both sides.<\/strong> Followers don&#8217;t see the admin&#8217;s name, photo or phone number, and admins can set up an admin profile separate from their personal one. A follower&#8217;s number stays hidden from the admin unless the admin has it saved.<\/li>\n\n\n<li><strong>Up to 16 invited admins<\/strong> at a time. Only the owner can invite and remove admins, delete the channel or transfer ownership.<\/li>\n\n\n<li><strong>Insights for the last 30 days:<\/strong> accounts reached, top regions, follows and unfollows, total followers, reactions and poll results.<\/li>\n\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>The limit is what a channel can&#8217;t do: it doesn&#8217;t know who your customer is, can&#8217;t personalize, can&#8217;t message a specific person and has no API integration. Meta&#8217;s coexistence documentation lists Channels as &#8220;not supported&#8221; on the Cloud API. WhatsApp has also introduced channel subscriptions and promoted channels in the directory, rolling out gradually and not in every country.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Communities and groups: when your audience needs to talk<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>A Community brings several groups together and creates a default announcement group. According to the Help Center:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>A community holds up to <strong>2,000 members<\/strong>, counting sub-groups and the announcement group.<\/li>\n\n\n<li><strong>Only admins post in the announcement group.<\/strong> Members can reply and react.<\/li>\n\n\n<li><strong>Members aren&#8217;t visible to everyone.<\/strong> In the announcement group, everyone sees the member count, but only admins see who the members are. A member&#8217;s number is visible to admins, to people who saved it and to people who have it from other chats.<\/li>\n\n\n<li><strong>Watch your mentions.<\/strong> WhatsApp&#8217;s community safety guide warns that @mentioning a member in the announcement group exposes their number to the whole community.<\/li>\n\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>This works well for classes, associations, residential buildings and customer program groups. It doesn&#8217;t work for individual notices: one customer&#8217;s invoice can&#8217;t go to a group.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>What about groups through the API? Meta offers a Groups API on the Cloud API, but for a different purpose. According to the <a href=\"https:\/\/developers.facebook.com\/documentation\/business-messaging\/whatsapp\/groups\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Groups API documentation<\/a>, it requires an Official Business Account, allows up to 8 participants per group, people join only through an invite link, and messages follow per-message pricing. It&#8217;s meant for support in small groups, not mass announcements.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">App broadcast lists: only for a few contacts<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>A broadcast list sends the same message as an individual chat. The rules, per the WhatsApp Help Center:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Up to <strong>256 contacts<\/strong> per list, and you can create as many lists as you like.<\/li>\n\n\n<li>Only people who saved your number in their contacts receive it. Everyone else silently doesn&#8217;t.<\/li>\n\n\n<li>It works on mobile only, not on WhatsApp Web or the desktop apps.<\/li>\n\n\n<li>In some countries, WhatsApp is gradually introducing a monthly broadcast limit.<\/li>\n\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>The WhatsApp Business app also offers <strong>business broadcasts<\/strong> (formerly called marketing messages). They&#8217;re paid, you&#8217;re charged only for messages that arrive within five days, and the feature is available only in some countries. The Help Center itself states that the WhatsApp Business Platform doesn&#8217;t support business broadcasts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>One important detail if you&#8217;re planning to migrate: when you connect your app number to the API through coexistence, <strong>broadcast lists are disabled<\/strong> and existing ones become read-only, according to <a href=\"https:\/\/developers.facebook.com\/documentation\/business-messaging\/whatsapp\/embedded-signup\/onboarding-business-app-users\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Meta&#8217;s documentation<\/a>. Channels and groups stay as they were in the app.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The official API: individual, automated announcements<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The API is the only option here built for announcements that depend on who receives them: &#8220;your order 10234 is out for delivery&#8221;, &#8220;your appointment is tomorrow at 9 am&#8221;, &#8220;your $129.90 invoice is due Friday&#8221;. Each message is an approved template, sent by your system to one opted-in recipient.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>What you get:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Automatic triggers.<\/strong> The notice goes out when an order changes status, an invoice comes due or an appointment gets close.<\/li>\n\n\n<li><strong>Per-person status.<\/strong> The webhook tells you whether each message was sent, delivered, read or failed, and with which error code.<\/li>\n\n\n<li><strong>Conversation in one place.<\/strong> If the customer replies, the message reaches your system, with a chatbot, a human agent or your CRM.<\/li>\n\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>What it costs: every delivered message is billed, at a rate set by the recipient&#8217;s country. For recipients in Brazil, since October 1, 2026, marketing costs BRL 0.3217 (Brazilian reais) and utility BRL 0.0350. Utility templates sent inside the customer service window are also billed since that date.
